Oxyride Rdes (flies ) Again

Image
The plane flew for under a minute and reached a height of 16 feet.

After the success of their battery powered car (2 AA Batteries) the Oxyride team have now taken to the skies!

A manned plane powered by conventional batteries took off from Tokyo on Sunday - and flew for 59 seconds.

The one-man, glider-like plane took off from a private airport and reached a height of 5.2 metres (16 feet).

It was powered by 160 AA batteries, which are commonly used in portable CD players and cameras.

"I was careful at take-off as it was very difficult," said pilot Tomohiro Kamiya, a senior member at the Tokyo Institute of Technology.

He added: "As it soared five metres, people on the ground looked so small to me.

"I did not expect it to take off so beautifully. I realised again how powerful it could be."

The Institute, known for its experiments with human-powered planes, and Matsushita, who provided the batteries, launched a joint project to develop the battery-powered plane in January.

In April, the joint team completed building the plane and suceeded in rolling and taxiing the aircraft in its first test flight.

In the second test the plane soared two metres above the ground and flew some 400 metres "almost independently".

Sunday's flight was the first in the presence of officials from the Japan Aeronautic Association.

Eco-friendly car goes to the extreme

Image
Panasonic has created a car that runs off… wait for it… two AA batteries!

We love Mother Nature as much as the next fella, but surely Panasonic’s new electric concept car that runs off two AA batteries is tree-hugging to the extreme. Next they’ll be coming up with a car that converts the heat from your buttocks into raw horsepower (hold on a sec, we’re calling the Patent Office). This isn’t a joke - the two AA battery thing, that is. Panasonic’s OxyRide car weighs under 20kg and can carry a passenger about a mile before running out of juice. Well, at least it’d get you to the shops and back!

It’s highly unlikely that we’ll all be zipping around in AA-battery-powered cars though, because this was really just an elaborate stunt by Panasonic to showcase its new range of Digital Xtreme Power AA batteries. Nonetheless, stunt or no stunt, it’s pretty impressive.
